Master Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The History of Craps
May 1st, 2026 by Aliyah

Be brilliant, play smart, and learn how to play craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
