Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
