Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps
November 29th, 2023 by Aliyah

Be clever, play clever, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
