Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Strategies: The History of Craps
November 7th, 2023 by Aliyah

Be cunning, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
