May 4th, 2023 by Aliyah

Be cunning, play clever, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
