Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
