Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
