Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
