Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Strategies: The Background of Craps
September 8th, 2021 by Aliyah

Be brilliant, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
