June 8th, 2019 by Aliyah

Be brilliant, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
