November 7th, 2015 by Aliyah

Be clever, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
