Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
