Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
