Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
