Pickup Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Background of Craps
July 24th, 2025 by Aliyah

Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
