Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
