Be a Master of Craps – Tips and Techniques: The Background of Craps
July 9th, 2025 by Aliyah

Be brilliant, play smart, and discover how to play craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
