Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
