Master Craps – Tips and Schemes: The Background of Craps
January 19th, 2024 by Aliyah

Be smart, play clever, and master craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
