Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
