Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
