Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
