Master Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps
March 29th, 2020 by Aliyah

Be cunning, play clever, and pickup craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
