Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
