Be cunning, play cunning, and pickup craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
