Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
