February 11th, 2025 by Aliyah

Be cunning, play brilliant, and pickup craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
