Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
